I put my first YouTube videos up in the middle of last year – Three of my favourite songs: Photograph, First and Drag Me Down. I enjoyed the recording and filming process so much, and I got such a great response, that I was encouraged to put up more. A song that I’d fallen in love with was Shawn Mendes’ Stitches – so I HAD to do it!
I’ve been playing the piano since a was a little girl, and it’s always been my preferred instrument (I am not by any means a virtuoso though), but I loved the guitar too, so I decided to give ‘Stitches’ a bash in a more raw/live recording on the guitar. Singing a song is one thing, but to hold a song in your hands, and to play it yourself makes it come to life, and gives it depth and meaning. This is what happened to me when I played ‘Stitches’.
It’s amazing how a bad relationship can literally scar and change a person. And some people never fully recover. I sang Stitches because I was one of the lucky ones that did recover with time and chocolate, but I also wanted to help those who hadn’t or couldn’t.
Through experience, I was able to understand how a person can drag you in like a “moth to a flame” and burn you alive, but it was important to remember that it won’t stay like that forever and that I was “gonna make it out alive” with scratches and scars, but they are only reminders of how strong I was. It was a song that encouraged me to “move on”, and I needed others to hear it’s positive and powerful message too – and hopefully help them through tough times.
Chocolate helps ... but sprinkle in some friendship and music, and you’ve got a recipe for recovery.
